The Orbit Big Summer Workshop 2012
Following on from the success of last summers Youth Orbit Big Summer Workshop More Music will be running The Orbit Big Summer Workshop at their newly refurbished Hot House premises in Morecambe. This year the extended 4-day Jazz Summer School will be open to all musicians (aged 12 and up) and will run from Monday 20th to Thursday 23rd August. The days will be from 10.00 until 4.00 and will include a supervised lunch break for younger musicians (all musicians will need to provide their own lunch).
Performance
At the end of the fourth day the musicians will put on a concert for family and friends in the upstairs venue at the Hothouse featuring the material they will prepare during the Summer School.
There is also a potential performance opportunity at the Lancaster Jazz Festival.
Skills
There will be a mixture of small group and large group sessions and also some Jam Sessions which proved to be very popular last year. The main points of focus for the Workshop will be:
- Improvisation & Listening: developing soloing knowledge and skills, playing behind and reacting to a soloist, playing off the rhythm section.
- Band Skills: understanding the rhythm section, understanding the front line, working together
- Composition: developing material for a Lancaster Jazz Festival performance
- Presentation: preparing for a concert, developing new repertoire, utilising old repertoire
The Leaders
The Big Summer Workshop will be run by 3 experienced members of the More Music team who have all worked extensively with the long running Orbit Jazz Workshop and are experienced players in their own right.

No previous jazz experience is necessary, just the desire to have a go, but please let us know your previous playing experience on the booking form as it will help us to prepare more effectively. We will be fine tuning the programme to meet the needs of the participants.
